TOURAINE
6.25" x 8.5" Flow Blue Sugar Bowl (c. 1898)
This is absolutely the biggest sugar bowl I have ever listed! And perhaps the prettiest, especially if you like flow blue, gold trim, and baroque handles with embossed detail....
This is a stunning sugar bowl made by Henry Alcock & Co. (Cobridge, England), in the very popular flow blue pattern called "Touraine." This piece was mixed in with a box of Alcock Touraine pieces I picked up recently at an estate sale here in Chicago (see my other listings). It has so much blue, I don't know where to start the description: blue foot, blue flowers on front and back of the ribbed sides, wide blue band around the shoulder, blue garlands around the rim, wide blue scalloped rim, and blue bouquets on the lid. There is gold trim and gold bands on the rim, handles, shoulder, and on the intricate embossed detail on the wedding cake lid and lid handle.
The sugar bowl measures 4.75 inches high at the rim, 6.25 inches high at the top of the lid handle, 8.5 inches wide across the side handles, 5.25 inches deep, and the oval foot is 4 inches by 3.5 inches. It is in fairly good condition, but there are some spots of damage (see last photo). I don't see any crazing, and no sign of cracks. However, there are small chips and flakes on both handles, one small spot on the top edge of the foot, one on the inside edge of the rim, and a glaze flake on the bottom of the foot. I almost got depressed when I got home with this piece and was cleaning it. I realized the lid seemed to have some glue on it, looking like a poor repair job, but with some delicate examination and a lot of hot water, I realized it was just sugary water that had solidified (whew, I think there might still be a little spot of it, based on one of my photos).
The bottom has several marks, the main one being a blurry partial blue mark for "Touraine | Semi-Porcelain | Henry Alcock & Co. | England | Reg. No. 329815." This logo was used by Alcock between 1891 and 1900, and the registered mark 329815 dates to 1898. less
