This is an original poster produced on the occasion of Cy Twombly’s exhibition inaugurating Gagosian’s new gallery at Grosvenor Hill, London in 2015. The featured work, Bacchus, is from the monumental series of paintings done in Twombly’s final years which mark the culmination of his 50 year career. The collective title of the series is Bacchus Psilax Mainomenos referencing the dual opposing natures of the ancient god of wine: soaring exhilaration, ecstasy, but also, madness, destructive debauchery. The tan, skin colored background is activated by swirling continuous loops in rich, saturated vermillion which seem to both climb and fall as the paint drips and runs down the canvas. Art commentators have called these potent paintings, the last great works of abstract expressionism. less
