Norman Arthur Bate (1916 - 1980) was a printmaker, illustrator and painter. He earned his bachelor's degree in illustration at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, then studied printmaking and painting at the University of Illinois, earning a Master's Degree. Early in his career, he gained recognition as a illustrator, particularly in the field of children's books. His first book was published in 1953, and six others were printed during the following years. Bate became the graphic arts instructor and Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957, holding that position until his retirement. During the following years he was very active in the field of original printmaking, most particularly creating prints in the mediums of aquatint and etching, winning him honors from institutions such as the Joseph E. Pennell Award (Library of Congress, Washington DC), the Paul J. Sachs Award (Fogg Museum, Harvard University), the Dana Museum Award, the Boston Printmakers Annual Award and the Wichita Art Museum Award. "Remnants of Night and Tide" is in the permanent collection of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), from its founding to the present, one of the oldest museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art, and the sixth-oldest public art institution in the United States. less
