Offered here is an Art Deco carved celluloid hand-woven crocheted evening bag from the 1920s. The body of the purse is stunningly executed in an intricate three-dimensional scalloped pattern created from black silk string; this is lined with hand-stitched mauve silk. But the raison d'etre of this singular evening bag is the hinged purse frame: the curved quintessentially Art Deco carved amber celluloid panels present an open-work design of peacocks reaching back over their shoulders to pluck a delectable bunch of cherries. The outer edge of the frame is embellished with a twisting rope design, and the center is graced with a geometric element flanked by stylized leaf patterns. The bag is in startlingly good condition for its age -- the celluloid is fully intact and glows with a rich amber light; the silk weave is tight and unblemished, and the lining is free of stains and discoloration, with the original stitching perfectly intact.
