The housing is made of white lacquered fiberglass, swivel base made of cast aluminum covered in white rilsan. The upholstery is original from the period. A truly rare unit that has never been restored or polished anymore.

The chair has the soft lines of modernism and was experimental with materials for its time. The chair is considered a classic of industrial design. Saarinen hoped to produce the chair as a one-piece unit made entirely of fiberglass, but this material was not capable of to support the base and the prototypes were prone to breaking. As a result, the base of the Tulip chair is cast aluminum with a rilsan finish to match the top shell, giving the appearance of a single unit. The upper shell is molded fiberglass with a plastic-reinforced finish. The upholstered foam cushion is removable with velcro closure.
