This piece by modern American Artist Stanton MacDonald-Wright, b. 1890- d. 1973, who co-founded synchronism (an early American, color-based mode of painting) is titled No. 2 Basho Stanton Kyoto/1966-67 is 50 out of 111 prints. It is a woodcut in colors on mulberry paper and it is signed in ink. Stanton MacDonald-Wright spent time in Japan, and during those years came to adopt the eastern approach to language and how it imparts a deep cultural non-western way of thinking. This influence was reflected in his works, especially of that time. The word “Basho” in the title can translate as “they said.” The full title of the work is “a cloud of cherry blossoms; a temple bell, is it from Ueno, is it from asakusa (basho)” from the Haiga portfolio.
