The art of making enamel objects in China was regional in Dynastic China. The metalsmiths working in Canton (Guangzhou,) the capital of China's southernmost province Guangdong had presented the Qing Court, especially during the period of Emperor Qianlong of the 18th Century. The art of making enamel objects continued to flourish into the 19th century. With the entry into the world trade markets in the world's fairs, there was an impetus to produce good merchandise to showcase China's arts, and to sell in the Chinese pavilions. Objects such as this beautifully crafted silver box were made. The decorations were repoussed into the silver sheets and soldered into a box. The designs highlighted in cobalt blue, light blue and pink enamels represent the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism
The Precious Parasol
The White Conch Shell
THe Two Golden Fish
The Knot of Eternity
The Vase of Great Treasures
The Victory Banner
The Lotus Flower
The eight Spoked Wheel
On all four sides have delicated raised designs of the Eight Auspicious Symbols in miniature. The surface has a rich tarnished appearance, showcasing the bright enamels. The silver box is stamped CHINA. This mark was used until the 1920's. The hinges still work well and supported by four little balls as feet. The box is in its original unpolished state, as some collectors prefer its authentic condition. Please note Chinese silver is not sterling. The tarnished surface shows its age and authenticity.
