Reynaldo learned the art of making pottery from his … more Mata Ortiz Pottery Metallic Graphite Black Vase by Reynaldo Quezada (1940-present). Reynaldo learned the art of making pottery from his older brother Juan Quezada (founding artist of Mata Ortiz pottery) and his other brother Nicolas. Reynaldo's first claim to fame came from his experiments with mixing clays and producing marbleized ollas. His second claim to fame comes from the graphite-polished black bowls, vases and flying-saucers with corrugated surfaces that he produces.

This vase employs his signature “tejido pattern” or cloth-texture incised into the lustrous black surface to reveal the matte layer below. Reynaldo Quezada started creating pottery over 30 years ago. He also worked with his sister Consolacion to refine the technique of creating polished, black textured vessels that made him famous. In addition, Reynaldo was Mexico’s first potter to create a marbleized aesthetic by mixing different clays.
