A fine and important late 15th century Mamluk period inlaid penbox (Qalamdan), possibly Syria or Mosul, late 1400's.
The slightly domed penbox is lavishly inlaid with gold and silver to both the exterior and interior, with bird motifs in a floral ground and gold geometric devices. The box having twin riveted hinges to the rear and a clasp to the front. A highly important museum quality 15th century pen box in excellent condition.
Similar boxes are housed in the collections of the Smithsonian, Metropolitan Museum and The British Museum.
