Henri de Toulouse Lautrec

Born in 1864 and died in 1901. Toulouse-Lautrec came from an aristocratic and artistic background, and showed a talent for drawing at an early age.At 14, his family arranged for him to take lessons from animal painter Rene Princeteau in Paris.By this time he had already suffered two riding accidents which eventually left him handicapped and deformed for life.At the age of 18, he decided to stay in Paris and study art seriously, and remained there until his death at 37.He found a place in Montmartre and developed his craft among contemporaries such as Bonnard, Degas, and Van Gogh.He became an integral part of life in Montmartre and frequented the demi-monde of Paris- the cabarets, music halls, bars and brothels- seeking out and capturing in his work the activities and inhabitants of this world.Many of the music hall artists and cancan dancers such as Jane Avril and La Goulue became his friends.In 1891 Toulouse Lautrec decided to investigate the art of lithography.He ultimately produced over 400 lithographs in the remaining ten years of his life, 30 of which were posters.
