This rare playful presentation features wonderful detailed faces, charming actions and whimsical music. Arranged on a faux bois paper covered wooden platform, a young organ grinder and his monkey entertain a little girl. When wound, a merry tune is heard the monkey dances in a circle, the boy turns the organ crank and both children move their heads.
The German manufacturer Zinner & Sohn produced sensational mechanical dolls and toys from 1845-1926. They worked in mostly bisque and wood and were a world leader in making mechanical and musical dolls. The bisque faces of the children were probably made by Simon and Halbig, another German firm. Both have glass eyes, mohair wigs and very detailed costumes. Note the girl's delicate apron, the boy's felt hat with ribbons and his intricate leggings. A charming toy from years past. less
