Beautiful pair of Rookwood art pottery raven bookends marked 1946. Their color is hard to define: not quite brown, not mauve but a lovely neutral with these tints. More stunning in person, these solid bookends are works of art.
Founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Storer, Rookwood made history—the first large manufacturing enterprise founded and owned by a woman in the United States and launching the art pottery movement in America. Within a decade, Rookwood pottery gained international acclaim, rivaling European and Asian firms that had been in existence for hundreds or thousands of years. Rookwood Pottery closed in 1967, before being revived in 2004. It was initially located in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has now returned there.
American Art Pottery encompasses a period of innovative development in materials, decoration, and technique in American ceramic production around the turn of the 20th century. Artists employed at various art pottery companies used their finely honed skills in painting and decoration to elevate wares to a fine art. One of the most innovative and well-known at the time and still today was Rookwood Pottery. (Edited from Iowa State University Museums) less
