Beautiful set of four, turquoise blue, majolica dessert plates made in Germany by Zell and attributed to artist George Schmider. Gorgeous and rare set with birds, berries, and leaves. Plates measure 6.5" diameter. and are marked Zell S inside a handled cup. Schmider used this back-stamp mark from 1907–1928.
Zell am Harmersbach is a town located between the Black Forest and the Rhine in Germany. Georg Schmider began his ceramic career in 1890 as an employee of Haager, Hoerth & Company. Within a decade, he owned the firm. In 1907, he purchased the Karl Schaaff ceramic manufacturing company, merging it with his previous company to create the "United Zell" conglomerate.
