He recommended Emile BERNARD to GAUGUIN and was one of the pillars of this "school".
He exhibited at the Salon of 1880 and 1881, before being refused in 1882 and 1883 and participating in the creation of the Salon des Indépendants the following year.
In 1886, he participated in the eighth and last exhibition of the Impressionists in the company of Berthe MORISOT, Edgar DEGAS, Camille PISSARRO... His work is marked by various influences: pointillism, symbolism, Gauguin...
He is also known for having owned works by Van Gogh and Cézanne, which he "improved", which gave him the reputation of a forger during the following century before these allegations were denied.
Among the many museums possessing his works, let us mention : the Museums of Fine Arts of Brest, Quimper, Pont Aven, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam...
SCHUFFENECKER's paintings can sell for more than 100,000 euros, it is of a highly sought-after artist given his participation in the Pont-Aven school.
This delightful pastel by SCHUFFENECKER represents a seaside, which could be located in Normandy (he often represented Etretat and the Normandy coasts).
If the artist's pastels are generally small (10 x 20 cms on average), the one we are offering measures 29 x 46 cms, a much more decorative format for a graphic work !
On the back of the frame, presence of stamps attesting to a former membership of the Parisian gallery owner Patrick Roger-Binet, specialized in the 19th century, and to the presence of the pastel as part of the "Schuffenecker" exhibition in 1988 at the Gallery Coligny (held by the above-mentioned).
