The Belgian artist Théodore Ceriez was a painter, draughtsman of portraits, interiors, characters, genre scenes and biblical scenes in the Realism and Romanticism style. Originally he painted scenes of civil life in the middle of the 18th century and later contemporary interiors.

He was born in Poperinge on 11 October 1831. After his training at the academies of Ieper and Antwerpen, he lived in Paris from 1854 to 1863, where he trained further in the studio of J.B.Fauvelet.

In 1863, he settled definitively in Ypres.

In the beginning of 1873, he was appointed teacher at the academy of Ieper, which he would lead as its director from 1891 to 1898.

Ceriez married Hélène Dehem in 1876. Her sister Louise De Hem would become his most successful pupil.

He died on 2 September 1904. See less
