Narcissus is depicted nude, save for a pair of sandals, standing atop a circular plinth with his head bowed and one arm extended. Draped over one shoulder is an animal skin. This portrayal is inspired by the original antique Narcissus discovered in a Pompeian house in 1862 by Giuseppe Fiorelli. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was renowned for his beauty and infamously fell in love with his own reflection. Incapable of tearing himself away, he remained fixated on his image for the remainder of his life. less
