A 1991 mixed media painting titled, Ancient Dwelling II, by American artist John Hultberg (1922-2005). Composed of acrylic, ink, paper collage, and watercolor, the painting depicts an abstract scene of blacked out figures seated upon a balcony within a theatre. Hard frenetic lines and shapes overlap the landscape. The painting is initialed and dated to the lower right corner. The painting is presented behind an off white mat in a black frame.
American artist, lecturer, and playwright John Hultberg studied at Fresno State College and California School of Fine Arts after WWII where he served as a Navy Lieutenant. His teachers constituted Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. A member of the "Sausalito Six", Hultberg is known for his Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism paintings. His work is held in many collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum. less
