With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale one of the finest Victorian Lockside chest of drawers that we’ve encountered in years. We’ve been having some difficulty keeping these in stock as we only encounter a handful every year and have to pass up on the majority of them due to condition issues. We listed an Oak lock side a couple of weeks ago and we were excited to finally have multiple lock side chests for sale but by the time we were able to get this from the estate the other chest had sold. With the presence of the butler's desk section and the wonderful burlwood & carved accents this chest employs a superior form. The work surface and the small drawers can function as a dressing table and are nice features to have in a chest to hold jewelry, watches, perfumes or any other accessories inside of your bureau. If you’ve been in the market for a high Victorian Walnut tall chest of drawers, we’d strongly recommend this example for your consideration.
In addition to the rare butler's section, we’d also like to point out the unusual shape of the center cartouches on each drawer. Most that we encounter have a simpler design that is shaped like a ghost from Pac-Man. The cartouches on this chest have a remarkable medallion shape topped with a rising sun. The same rising sun carvings can also be found at each end of the paneled drawer faces. The medallion on the drawer with the butler's section is monogrammed with the initials DS and was highlighted with a gold gilt paint. Each drawer retains their original brass pulls and even those are an unconventional and rare design. The vertical stiles flanking the drawers showcase beautiful burled walnut panels with shallow floral carvings and carved rosettes. The chest was probably made in New York City & is in very good condition with our only notes being minor surface wear, a couple of small chips on the base, and one small piece of molding missing from the left side of the second drawer that we'll have our restorer replace. The chest measures 40 1/2” wide x 22 1/2” deep x 57 1/2” tall.
