One of the rails has a piece chipped out of it as can be seen in the last photo. This does not affect the integrity of the side rail. Originally the "foundation" would have been rope and the feather mattress would be placed on top of this. Later when springs came into being angle irons were added to he rails to support the spring and the mattress. Minor wear to the finish consistent with use and age. Bed was made about 1825. The inside measurements of the bed, where the box spring and mattress go, are not consistent with modern mattress sizes. Inside the rails the opening is 48" wide and 71 1/2" long. The width is what today is known as a super single but the length is short. In other worlds a custom spring and mattress is needed for this bed. There are some chips to the ends of the canopy frame that do not affect the integrity of the canopy frame. less

Obviously the front or foot posts are turned and reeded while the head posts are turned but not reeded. This is because the curtains would be gathered at the head posts so they wouldnt be seen and the fancier, more expensive, foot post is what "visitors" would see. The bed has been refinished in recent years except for the side rails. One of the rails has a piece chipped out of it as can be seen in the last photo.
