As Khotan was a Buddhist kingdom, this rug employs symbolic golden-yellow spandrels in the field corners and the continuously drawn black Chinese meandering characters in the inner border, both important traditional Chinese images hand woven in high quality wool. The medallion field design features floral irises similar to pomegranates and chrysanthemums, accented by finely woven black, white, blue, and green curvilinear motifs in the rich red field. The choice of this bright red was key to highlighting the floral imagery, as special Khotan pieces with pomegranate and chrysanthemum depictions symbolized plentiful bounty, fertility, and fortune, though the presence of brighter more ornate colors is an interesting accent to the traditional design.
