Originating from East Turkestan between 1920-1940, this antique transitional Khotan rug has several uniquely subtle influences to its design. As Khotan rugs are known for their individuality from piece to piece, this rug’s lack of outlines to many of the curvilinear orbs throughout the medallion field design and border, give the tan color way a very muted, gentle appearance in tandem with the salmon pink-red background—uncommon even among this type of antique.
Additionally, as many Khotan rugs are known for their homage to Oriental and Buddhist symbols, the curves in the spandrels (in the corners of the field) and the center medallion strongly resemble Chinese ruyi clouds, a distinguished royal symbol of growth and nature. Both the inner and outermost borders wrap the field with gentle floral buds, accented by finely woven brown hues in the hand woven, high quality wool. Quick and easy to clean.
