Original work by Los Angeles based artist Chris Trueman. His works has been exhibited at the Moma Los Angeles, Milan, Italy, Los Angeles, Seatle and other galleries. Below is the latest information on the artist biography at the Wisnton Watcher gallery in Seatle.
Chris Trueman draws on Op Art and Abstract Expressionism for his distinct style that references graffiti and digital art. His compositions, filled with layers of positive and negative space, center the physical act of mark-making and its residual effects. Through a combination of gestural painting and spray-painting, Trueman creates space through inversion, where the absence of a brushstroke holds as much presence as concrete shapes. His latest work is painted on Yupo, a synthetic, non-absorbent paper that pushes this process to its logical extreme. Paint is alternately repelled and attracted to the paper, articulating negative gestures as their own distinct forms. Finished works take on a kaleidoscopic haze, full of complex layering that both breaches through the surface and invites the viewer into a rabbit hole of color and texture.
“The combined effect is a surface that successfully mimics the digital or photographic space without actually being either of these things. This strange physical nature conveys my interest in the transitory and fragile nature of representational imagery as well as the malleability and flexibility of the painting medium.” — Chris Trueman
Chris Trueman graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003, earning dual BFA degrees in Painting and Digital Media. He relocated to southern California to attend Claremont Graduate University, earning a MFA in 2010. Trueman currently teaches at Chaffey College and has previously taught at Chapman University, Fullerton College and Santa Ana College. He has guest lectured at Chapman University, Pomona College and Santa Ana College and was a Northrup Grumman Visiting Artist/Scholar at the Museum of Art and History Lancaster. Trueman has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, Portland and internationally in Milan, Paris, Berlin, Beijing and Brisbane (AUS). less
