Painted for Jones' solo exhibition 'Tales from the Cutting Room Floor', this work was inspired by the film Bladerunner (1982) - a longstanding source of inspiration for Jones' paintings.
Merged with other memories, the painting presents the self or other-self as indignant or perhaps exuding a strength of conviction. In any case a powerful woman.
One of the first paintings by Jones that references the physical medium of film by including part of the 'letterboxing' at the bottom of the painting (black block). She utilises the contrast between it and her signature painterly marks to draw the viewer back to the materiality of the object, taking us from the subject and back to the process of painting and how she commands it as a vessel for memory.
Exhibited as part of the Bergdorf Goodman x Chairish exhibition 2024 in NYC. less
