Spanish monasteries normally have a garden patio inside, and the architecture is built around the patio.
Those patios were used by monks or nuns to walk around and pray in solitude. They normally have beautiful flowers and medicinal plants, that the monks and nuns would gardening while they pray, since they were not allowed to talk to each others. So it was a nice way to occupy their minds and be in contact with nature.
This type of benches are placed in the open galleries or corridors around the patio. The monks or nuns would walk around the galleries praying and eventually sit on the benches looking at the beautiful garden. less
