The German painter, photographer and sculptor Peter Klasen was born in Lübeck in 1935.
Peter Klasen grew up in a family sensitive to the arts: his uncle Karl Christian Klasen, student of Otto Dix, was an expressionist painter of landscapes and portraits and his grandfather, patron and collector, introduced him to the world painters who are family friends. Peter Klasen began drawing and painting at a very young age. He learned about lithography and airbrushing techniques. Reading Dostoyevsky, Kafka and Thomas Mann had a profound impact on him.
The industrial theme deeply marks his work. We thus find in Klasen's paintings elements such as pressure gauges, sheets of public works machinery, metal locks, truck and wagon tarpaulins, hydraulic circuit hoses. Also present in his paintings are logos, figures and photos from magazines or posters.
A master of contrasts, he is fascinated by the hostility of the modern city and by representations of the body as a commodity.
The recent meeting between the Print and Peter Klasen brought the New Figuration or Narrative Figuration into the Lacan collection, thus developing its diversity. We find in the aquagravures of the artist of German origin his interest in our society. There, industrial themes, the image of the body, consumer objects, advertisements, vehicle paintings, etc. come together, a critical reflection of our social environment.
