Traditionally used as cornices, or what is now known as a "French return rod," these valances were affixed to the wall above windows. Curtains or specialty fabric would then be attached to the valance, draping a few inches in front of the glass.In the mid-1700s, window coverings were a luxury reserved for the nobility and upper class. However, as the 19th century unfolded and the middle class grew in both number and influence, window dressings became more popular. This pair of finely-carved walnut valances, a testament to that era, retains its functionality and can still be used as intended. Alternatively, you can elevate your bedroom by hanging these above a bed against a wall, creating a regal and stylish alternative to a traditional bed corona.
