A rare matching set of four antique flori-form candle holders by noted American metalworker, jeweler and designer, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972). Each silvered metal candlestick measures 12.2 inches height, is fully marked, and comes directly from Zimmermann's estate. The set dates to the Arts & Crafts period, circa 1915, while Zimmermann maintained her home and atelier at the National Arts Club in New York.
The surfaces show hammer marks (although likely cast) and long tube stems join domed and fluted bases to fluted collars. Each candlestick includes a removable candle cup and the stems have double scored lines at the top and bottom. All marked / stamped Marie / Zimmermann / Maker around her MZ cipher over 75 (model number) underfoot. Very good condition with small areas of tarnish/oxidation, measuring 12.2 in. Height x 3.38 in. Diameter (at candle cup) x 5.25 in Diameter (at base). A similar example of this form in gilt copper with twisted stems is illustrated on page 329, fig. 10.7 of The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2012.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds the largest collection of objects by Marie Zimmermann, acquiring their first example of her work in 1922. Zimmermann's jewelry and metalwork designs are also in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, and the Columbus Museum of Art.
Provenance: the Estate of Marie Zimmermann. less
