“Those we love tie our hearts in knots but we never stop giving them the ribbons of our presence.” -Curtis Tyrone Jones. Well, our hearts are DEFINATELY in knots over this magnificent vintage abstract Ribbon sculpture by Richard Mann!! WOW… Let me just start by saying that it’s not every day you get the honor of speaking directly to the actual artist and creator of something as phenomenal as this vintage piece, however, I hold that honor! What a great guy!! How lucky am I to have had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Richard Mann himself and learning a bit about his incredible life within the fascinating world of art, some of his personal and professional endeavors, and his thoughts of possibly resurrecting his talents and relaunching new masterpieces in the art universe! Wouldn’t that be wonderful?? We certainly think so… fingers are crossed Mr. Mann!!! He created this particular Ribbon sculpture in striking colors of red, black, and metallic silver on October 14th, 1990, using a “secret” formulation which he personally created using metallic powders, paint, resin, and plexiglass. He came up with this scheme while creating a gift for his own father! The color’s nuances have a beautiful clear fluidity, yet they don’t blend and run together… he referred to these bright, bold color blends as the “jeweled tones” in his collections … it is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! The sculpture is marked with his signature in black on the front and “ESR 105” in white on the back which we now know means “Extended S Ribbon” along with identification & date significance. It is a large-scale piece composed of plexiglass folded into an exquisite abstract ribbon shape and it is going to make a bold statement on ANY wall in your home! It would be stunning in an entry way, above your bed in the master bedroom, or on the wall in your living or family room. It was created by a master artist with an impressive Bio and he’s an awesome guy to boot! It is a DEFINATE conversation piece you are sure to love for years to come!
Richard Mann is an artist and real estate agent located in Santa Barbara, California. He was well-known for his artwork beginning in the late 60’s into the early 80’s. After 35 prosperous years, he decided he needed a change and he chose to dive into real estate but during his time in the art world, he had several one man shows and exhibits including an incredible spread showcased in Design Miami in 2022. He presented at a fair in Basel Switzerland, sold his work in New York, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara to name a few places. He was a dealer and had his own gallery at one point and his work was featured in a beautiful 1971 Architectural Digest article. His works include collections using his own formulated metallic powders, plastic resins, and painted Masonite’s. He created both smaller and very large multiple panel pieces such as diptychs, triptychs, tapestries, and something he calls “Quadramonds.” Richard Mann lives a successful life in Santa Barbara, still involved in real estate and recently stated that he is contemplating a resurrection and may choose to relaunch some of his incredible work. We look forward to that!!
