Vintage; Late 19th. Century Artist, Axel Bulow, Born in Denmark in 1900, is this, lower left hand-corner signed, oil on canvas, seascape, maritime painting framed in a gilt wood frame. The painting depicts a Sailing ship, near or off the coast of Kronberg, as most of his pieces are along that coast, but with varying types of Maritime ships and boas or dingy's. Also a red dingy, or small fishing vessel with fishermen in the foreground or adjacent but near the large central, sailing ship, as well as a sailing ship way back in the receding horizon or background but to the left side of central sailing ship. A choppy day reflective of the multi-colorations of seawater, along with the sheen of reflection offset from the other vessels abound, as well as the somewhat blue skies, as well as the soft puppy gray clouds, sets off a balance of proportion and color, for this skilled painter's adeptness of light and shadow, as well as creating a realistic scene, of a Seascape/maritime ship painting. Usually his paintings are also signed and dated on the reverse upon the canvas, but it is difficult to see, given the age of the canvas. Well cared for, not chipping or paint chipping evident, although one can see the light crackling to the light matte veneer of varnish which had been applied. Light fastness of the color saturation is in excellent condition. Frame has some minor scratches, otherwise backside as image indicates the canvas has gotten darker by age, especially due to period, as canvas's can date pieces, as does paint, the type of paint utilized, when that paint was available or IF current or past tense, etc. as well as the stretchers, and the type of fastening applied i.e. staples vs nails, etc. From a San Fransisco Retired Couple, who became Transplants to Palm Beach, Florida, and consigned herein. Item was purchased in Europe in the C.1980's
