This painting is a modern copy of a portrait thought to be Catherine of Aragon by Michael Sittow (Estonian 1469-1525). Recent research has raised the possibility it might actually be Mary Tudor, the youngest sister of King Henry VIII.
At 43.25” x 31.25”, the painting is much larger than the original. The grand scale makes an imposing statement and suits the subject — bringing the details of skin, hair, fabric, gold and jewels to life.
Oil on canvas, unsigned. Impeccable technique and a studied understanding of the renaissance original make this painting a modern treasure for generations to come.
