This elegant piece is a French Art Nouveau Ladies' Writing Desk dating from around 1895-1910. Can't you just imagine an elegant Parisian woman, sitting in her salon, and keeping up with her correspondence at this lovely writing table?
While the Art Nouveau style reigned in Paris from around 1895-1914, it reached its' pinnacle in 1900 with the Paris World's Fair. Designers such as Hector Guimard, who designed the Art Nouveau Paris Metro stations, embraced sinuous lines and details inspired by plant life and flowers.
This desk is an exercise in understated elegance, with its rectilinear top and elegantly tapered legs. Crafted from valuable mahogany, it has a lovely warm and mellow tone, with beautiful striations on the drawer fronts and on each side. The worktop is a soft brown leather with a gilt-tooled detail at the perimeter. Below, three drawers offer ample storage space. The two side drawers even have operable antique locks for your most prized possessions. Cast bronze escutcheon plates add just the right amount of sparkle.
This is a statement-making piece, whose elegant details and clean lines would be well-suited to both contemporary and traditional spaces. It even comes with an original skeleton key. Très chic!
