Oil on board titled “Group of Women & Child” by Emanuel Romano, depicting women lounging with one playing a musical instrument. Signed. Date unknown. Not framed. Circa 1930s.
Emanuel Gilcenstein Romano (1897-1984) was an American painter born in Rome. His father was celebrated scupltor Henryk Gilcenstein. Romano studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. Afterwards, he worked for the Federal Art Project and later taught at the City College of New York. He created woodcuts for T. S. Eillot’s “The Wasteland” and he helped in setting up a museum in Israel dedicated to his father’s work. His own work can be found at the Boston Fine Arts Museum and the Met, among others. less
