As a printmaker, he enjoys an international reputation although o book has adequately covered his work in the field. His sensitive drawings and brilliant collages are little known and have never been extensively exhibited. This volume, containing a selection of his collages and drawings - with sixty full-color plates made directly from the original works, and a catalogue raisonne of all his lithographs through 1970, handsomely reveals Kelly as a master of these techniques. Like his paintings, these works reflect Kelly's preoccupation with color and form, dominant elements in his work since 1949. His studies of plants, flowers and frit demonstrate his tendency to reduce form to its elegant essence. His fascination with natural phenomena - the play of light on water, shadows and forms of pipes against a stone wall, the outline of a window against the sky - reveals itself in abstract collages composed of bright, pure colors, made since the early 50s in Paris. Kelly continues to develop endless permutations of shape and color, systematically conceived and pristinely executed. The result is an oeuvre which for twenty years has been ahead of its time." less
