20th Century Pair of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Palace Vases
Pair of Blue and White Porcelain Dragon palace vases.
The Blue and White Porcelain Dragon vases are beautifully decorated in vivid cobalt blue underglaze with an elaborate dragon motif against a background of stylized clouds and smoke wisps sitting between a lotus blossom and ruyi head pattern band at the bottom base and top of the vase.
The elegant dragon design and shape of the vases make the pair easy to place in any room decor. The pair of vases are meant to be placed on the floor with stands. However, the pair can be placed on furniture without the stands if one prefers.
The dragon is perhaps the most important motif in the Chinese ceramic decorative repertory being symbolic of Imperial power. During the Song period, the dragon motif was employed as an archaistic chilong type with three large claws set in relative isolation giving the sinuous snake-like body maximum impact. This was perpetuated during the Yuan dynasty, although the dragon had developed into the more 'mature' type, with a characteristic blunt nose, strained eyes beneath fringed lashes, pronounced antler-like horns and thick tresses sweeping from beneath their necks into high coiffures. During the early Ming period, the dragon typically remained unobscured by surrounding decoration, whether clouds, flames, or foliage, retaining its whole body as a dominant single visual entity.
The rendering of the dragons on these vases is unobscured, with beautiful scaly bodies executed with precise movements of the brush, would have been remarkably difficult to achieve, as it gives an impression of the dragon's powerful rhythmic motion in action.
The palace vases are sold with wood stands 4 pieces total.
