- A 42" x 27" poster of Alpha-Pi by Morris Louis (1912-1962) by The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of 20th … more A 42" x 27" poster of Alpha-Pi by Morris Louis (1912-1962) by The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of 20th Century Art. Morris Louis was one of the earliest exponents of Color Field painting, a style of abstract painting that emerged in New York City in the 1940s and 50s, inspired by European modernism and closely related to abstract expressionism. Louis is known for his work in Magna paint and use of stripes as a vehicle for color. Alpha-Pi (1960) is one of Louis's "Unfurled" paintings, which he created on a mural-sized canvases and which feature irregular rivulets of different colors flowing diagonally down toward the lower center of the canvas but never meeting, with the center of the unprimed canvas remaining blank. less
