Signed in the print at the … more An excellent vintage original offset lithograph print after painting "War" (1894) by Henri Rousseau. Signed in the print at the lower right corner: "Henri Rousseau". Printed on one side. Hand tipped-in on a board of heavy paper. Numbered. Name of the artist and information about original painting will be found by lifting the plate. Comes from a rare art folio published by Albert Skira, in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1940s. First Limited Edition. Excellent condition - minor age wear on the the board, never framed.

Shown in the Salon des Independants of 1894, this is one of the Douanier's greatest works. Here Rouseau's realistic imagination is seconded by an amazing dynamism. We are reminded of those soaring bands of angels figuring in the skies of classical pictures. All the normal conceptions of perspective are ruled out and superseded by a new one, in which the modeling, reduced to the merest hints, reminds us of Gauguin. less
