Signed in the print at the lower left corner: "Henri Rousseau". Very detailed. Printed on one side. Hand tipped-in on a board of heavy paper. Numbered. Name of the artist and information about original painting will be found by lifting the plate. Comes from a rare art folio published by Albert Skira, in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1940s. First Limited Edition. Excellent condition - minor age wear on the the board, never framed.

Not did he ever know anything about Japanese art, and the "Fauves" had not yet come into being. None the less this picture of the Vencennes woods is an arrangement of flat surfaces, bathed in how suave a light! Our first impression is one of superb craftsmanship, but we soon forget the technique (owning nothing to any art theory or system) behind the composition, when we realize that in painting this picture Rousseau made do with such makeshift equipment as he chanced to possess and which some kindly providence had placed within his reach. less
