- This box is a beautiful example of Japanese craftsmanship.The lock and hinges indicate it as coming from the late Meiji … more This box is a beautiful example of Japanese craftsmanship.The lock and hinges indicate it as coming from the late Meiji Period (1886-1912) or early Taishi Era (1912-20). The subtly curved top, choice and placement of wood and the gold flecked lacquer/e-maki interior have a subtle sophisticated and quality of design not often seen in similar yosegi-zaiku boxes. The export label, from the Shizuoka Prefecture (on the west coast and home to Mount Fuji) dates from around 1920-35. less
