Known as coin chest (Ton-Kwe … more A Korean top-lid chest on elevated carved legs circa late 19th century of Joseon Dynasty. Known as coin chest (Ton-Kwe in Korean), this type of chest was originally used for storing money and valuables. They were always made with strong hardwood and heavy-duty cast iron hardware and lock plate for safety reason. The chest on offer is a great example of Ton-Kwe made from thick solid maple planks, which was uncommon for large furniture like this in Korea. The chest was fitted with heavy iron hinges, lock plate, and elongated swallow-tail shape brackets and small medallions with conical protrusion. It was reinforced for the task as intended. The chest is supported by four carved legs connected in pair with stretchers. The legs are slightly curvy resembling a cabriole form. There are two handles on the side for easy transportation. The interior retains lining of printed rice paper, a common practice in Korea. less
