A sculpture of the God Eros & Psyche on a grand conforming pedestal. One of the most classically important sculptures in history.
Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss
by Antonio Canova (1757-1822).
Displayed in the Louvre Museum & the Hermitage.
This is an exquisitely executed 19th Century Italian sculpture after Antonio Canova's original.
The sculpture stands on a conforming marble pedestal with deeply carved Acanthus Leaves.
The Greek Myth of Cupid & Psyche:
Cupid's Mother, the goddess Venus, envious of the beauty of her son's beloved, dispatched Psyche into the Underworld to fetch a vessel containing Proserpina's beauty ointment, forbidding her to open the flask.
Psyche could not resist looking inside the flask and immediately fell into a deep death like sleep.
Only the kiss of Cupid returned her to life.
This is the moment caught by the scultor.
Canova took his inspiration from a legend recounted by Latin author Apuleius in the Metamorphoses.
Antonio Canova (1 November 1757-13 October 1822) was one of Italy's finest sculptors from the Republic of Venice.
He was the epitome of the neoclassical style and his work marked a return to classical refinement.
Like the original the sculpture draws into the Legendary moment of true love. less
