Bette Fast (1917-1994)
What began as a love of sketching and painting evolved to sculpting by the age of 42. This passion was pressed by the need to express her forms in multiple dimensions. Most of her subjects were women whom she viewed as ‘the sacred source of life’. A passionate feminist herself, her work celebrates the feminine form. Her husband, Howard Fast (1915-2003) novelist and politically controversial due to his support of communism which, when dropped by his publishers, forced him to self publish what turned out to be his best selling novel, ‘Spartacus’, adored her and supported her work. He published ‘The Sculpture of Bette Fast’ in 1995, a loving memoir of Bette’s art and a photographic journey of her progression in sculpture.
This large painting dated 1965 features three nude woman, described as buxom in her husband’s memoir, reaching upwards. The Foreward states, “She had just finished a series of nudes, large buxom women rendered in Paynes gray and in white, I thought they were splendid, but they left her dissatisfied. Her need for three dimensional form lead her to sculpture.” Wood frame over stretched canvas, trim in gold tone, stained wood on sides. Labeled #7 CHILDREN. Gorgeous tool marks and brush marks in the paint. A real fine piece!
Signed in pencil BETTE FAST 1965. Purchased with other signed items from a private collection.
Approximately Shipping to lower 48 states is included in my price.
Bette exhibited 3 times, in New Canaan, Greenwich (CT) and then in Los Angeles. She has 2 large sculptures at the Temple Shalom in Greenwich, CT; Grief:Child of the Holocaust (1991) and Holocaust (1994) Most of her work is in private collections. She did not make copies of her works. This is indeed a one of a kind.
*MadModWorldVintage is passionate about decorative arts with fantastic history and wishes to preserve the legacy of the artists by doing the research and then educating the consumer on why these pieces are worth collecting and preserving. The story behind the cool art is what makes it dear to a collector. THE SCULPTURE OF BETTE FAST by M E SHARPE (forward by HOWARD FAST) is readily available on the secondary market and in libraries around the country. I do own a copy of it.
