Fayatteville sideboards are rare and their simple, refined elegance make them a highly sought after form.

Made between 1810-1820 in the Upper Cape Fear/Fayatteville North Carolina area, this piece is all old-growth walnut and has original yellow pine secondary wood/glue blocks. Measuring 57.75 inches wide, it's wonderful size is even daintier than other known examples from this region. The diminutive scale, rectangular form with two central doors flanked by double door cupboards, and twice-pegged joints are all indicative of Fayatteville work. The inlay on this piece is incredible. The delicate string inlay on the drawers, the prominent linen fold inlay bookending each cupboard, the subtle block inlay along the bottom edge, and the inlaid cuffs on the feet all combine to create an elegant whole.

This sideboard is a clear match to the archetypal example illustrated in "The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina, 1700-1820" by John Bivins, Jr. Also, there are two other documented examples in the Maine Antique Digest within the last 15 years, both priced higher than how we have priced this piece. This sideboard is one of those pieces that is hard to part with. As we took the pictures, it was so easy to imagine it staying in our home.
