the work of peter reichet is multifaceted: it is fabulous and realistic, scrupulous and inconsistent, ironic and dramatic, transcendental and everyday. He distinguished himself as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, performance artist, creator of art objects and large-scale installations, and teacher. It seems that any technique was under his control, be it oil paints, pastels, ink, or working with papier-mâché, metal, and even with a dangerous weed - hogweed (“the hut on chicken legs”, 2012).
peter reykhet was born into the family of the famous painter victor reykhet, who became his first and most important teacher. In addition to drawing, he took lessons in playing the piano and seven-string guitar. Music became for the artist an element that united various, often completely opposite, aspirations. His workshops often hosted house parties, sound was an integral part of artistic events, and musical instruments appeared at his works (“rock and roll is dead,” 1990s). Reikhet was educated at the academy of arts (spbsaizhsa named after i.e. Repin) from viktor oreshnikov, an outstanding portrait painter and teacher of his father. Therefore, in the portrait genre, he often acts as a traditionalist: drawing dominates painting, and the characters are recognizable and spiritual (“vera reichet”, 1985).
reikhet seemed to live several lives in one, successfully realizing himself not only in the artistic field (portrait painter, master of genre compositions and still lifes, author of illustrations and conceptual works), but also as a tireless traveler, engineer-geomorphologist, fascinated by the far north. The artist participated in arctic expeditions, combining scientific work with plein air painting and performances. His love for the deserted cold land and sea travels was combined with a passion for folklore, russian epics and fairy tales (“whale island”, 1990). Therefore, reykhet populates his works with flying fish and fantastic creatures, brave heroes and fatal beauties. These works are distinguished by their flatness of image, rich palette and grotesque humor, which brings them closer to both popular prints and subjects from medieval miniatures.
freedom, vivid impressions and boundless imagination were the main guidelines in the artist’s art. All this inspired him to constantly search for expressive means and create sparkling statements, not limited by the boundaries of one direction or another. Along with working on abstract works (“music for whales and masons”, 2002), he integrated into his art the artistic features of russian icon painting (“massacre of the innocents”, 2012-2013) and actively experimented with the nude genre (“maria”, 2005).
peter reichet, like the mythical god proteus, the son of poseidon and hera, who has the ability to metamorphoses and is closely associated with the element of water, was constantly changing and eluding stable connotations. Therefore, it is difficult to put his creative legacy into any clear framework by simply dubbing him a “modern” or “current” author. When he defined the credo of his work, he called it “compostomodernism,” but when he gave names to his objects and included reason, they bore traces of deliberate intentionality and playful distance (k. Ochertyanny). This is his famous art object “porn star” from 2004, which succinctly and clearly expresses the author’s conceptual idea. Reykhet is a truly extraordinary person who has managed to express himself with constant diversity and professionalism in so many different genres and fields. The exposition of the exhibition “visibly and invisibly” is folded like a patchwork quilt or a multidimensional statement about freedom of spirit, the beauty of nature and man, adventure and an incredible lifelong journey.
