This is a beautiful and one-of-a-kind alabaster and bronze chandelier done in the Neoclassical style. The Neoclassical style was characterized by grandiosity, symmetry, and Ancient Greek symbols. It originated in the early 18th Century in Europe and was a direct response to the frivolity and flirtation of the Rococo style. Many people became infatuated with the Neoclassical style because it represented a new creation that was based on and modeled after the wisdom of the ancient gods before them.
This is a stunning chandelier with a bowl-shaped alabaster bowl. The bowl has visible natural veins that create a stunning effect reminiscent of natural cloud formations. The artisan has also carved large scallop shells into the mineral. Scallop shells were a popular French motif associated with birth and life. Four miniature bronze lion head screws connect the bronze rope to the bowl. They have been simplistically molded and their circular shape mimics the curve of the bowl. Lions were a large part of European culture, often symbolizing strength, courage, and royalty.
The bowl is suspended by four rope-like bronze arms attached to the canopy by an S-hook. It creates an imagery of brawn and durability. Like the shade, the canopy also has ornaments with rich iconography. A pinecone hangs from the bottom, representing regeneration, while acanthus leaves cover the canopy. Acanthus leaves were originally a Greek motif that meant rebirth, however through the ages, it became a staple in many European designs. Overall, this is a magnificent chandelier that combines a rich European history with aesthetic design. It would look best in a foyer, entryway, or large bedroom.
