The soft, dreamy images possible with mezzotint are apparent in this mezzotint etching, the first of its kind commissioned by the Print Club of Albany in 1996. According to Kipniss, "...this work explores aspects of the intimacy of semi-rural backyards in moonlight." Numbered and signed, in pencil lower margin: "78/150 Kipniss". Print size: 9-3/8 x 7 inches plate line to plate line, on a deckle-edged sheet of watermarked Arches paper measuring 14 x 11-1/2 inches. Mint condition, from an immaculate private collection of a member of the Print Club of New York.
Robert Kipniss was born in 1931 in New York City. He has studied at the Art Students League, Wittenburg University, and the University of Iowa where he received his BA and MFA in painting and art history. He spent many years making lithographs from stone, aluminum and Mylar plastic. He then switched to mezzotint copper-plate etchings. Since 1965 Kipniss has had more than twenty museum and other institutional one-man exhibitions across the United States and abroad. Kipniss' work is held by more than eighty-eight museums and other institutions, most notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, the British Museum, and the Smithsonian's National Gallery. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1980.
