Exquisite size of San Juan Evangelista … more Sculpture size "San Juan Evangelista" around 1580, Juan de Anchieta workshop - Castellana School
Exquisite size of San Juan Evangelista made towards the last quarter of the 16th century. from extraordinary invoice, the iconography corresponds to the attitude of St. John the Evangelist in Calvary, located to the left of Christ. Crying out to heaven, his eyes appear turned however his face is serene. Dexterity and ability by the author when developing this piece, designed to have a single point of view, round bulk size but subject to an altarpiece. The back has not been carved, it is rough to minimize weight.
San Juan presents a complete and exquisite anatomy, both on the face and on feet and hands. His serene face presents a Greek profile thanks to his straight nose. Likewise, his hair is configured with unpayers of remarkable chiaroscuro. His hands in prayer tend to a contained realism and his feet, with one more advanced than another, follow the Greek counterpoint. These are classicist characteristic, present in the sculptures that drink from the Romanism of Juan de Anchieta (1533-1588).
The tertiary mantle leaves his right shoulder exposed by seeing the tunic, and is collected in the opposite arm, falling into large undulating folds that open to show the green robe again with rich brocades. Ideal complement is your polychromy. Outside, golden mantle with extraordinary cenefa of rich bluish tone stakes; Inside, the mantle is reddish. It is also worth highlighting the polychromy work of the face, carried out on a brush, such as its thin eyebrows or the painful tears.
CONSERVATION STATE: This is a sculpture of the 16th century, it is preserved in good condition with respect to its antiquity and use. There are obvious signs of having been intervened in the nineteenth century, redoring it and returning it this special brightness. Likewise, wear can be seen in the incarnation areas, nothing annoying for the global vision of the set. A piece of magnificent invoice for demanding collectors.
