1960s Afghan Maimana Kilim Rug. Hand woven with wool on wool foundation by the Maimana tribes of Northern Afghanistan. Kilims'& Flat Weaves are rugs without'the pile.'Woven by tightly interweaving the warp and'weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Generally woven on horizontal looms, this weaving technic produces crisp geometrical designs. Being lighter in weight and softer to the touch than traditional pile carpets, Kilims were also used as'sofa covers, drapes, pillows, table covers and wall hangings as tapestries and insulation from the extreme cold.
