- It is in very good used condition. The buffet top has been refinished. The rest of the buffet has its … moreIt is in very good used condition. The buffet top has been refinished. The rest of the buffet has its original finish with some minor scratches or marks that have been retouched here or there. The wood carvings have some natural imperfections including a non-structural split on the upper frame and vine carving of the left door. Please see the picture. The original fabric on the outside of the doors was worn out and has been replaced with a similar fabric. The pleated silk fabric on the inside of the doors is original and has some stains. There is a linear split in the veneer on the inside bottom shelf. The backstop on the back top edge of the buffet is not original. less

This elaborately hand-carved Art Nouveau buffet / sideboard from the late 19th century will surely be a statement piece in your home. The serpentine top sits above two unique curved wood doors with fabric panel inserts that are overlaid on the top with exquisite wood carvings of vines with fruit (gooseberries, perhaps?). Richly detailed pilaster columns frame the doors. Each side of the buffet has three curved open shelves edged with carved scalloped trim. It all sits on sturdy carved wood feet. The buffet is constructed of solid wood believed to be walnut. The inside surfaces are lined with wood veneer. Although it likely had a mirror on top at one time, it now has a carved wood backstop at the back edge. With its roomy interior and side open shelving, the buffet provides a good amount of storage for your fine things.
The buffet has clearly been lovingly cared for and shows remarkably little wear for its age. There are a few minor marks and touched-up scratches. The top has been refinished to match the original finish on the rest of the buffet. The wood carvings have some natural imperfections. The outer fabric panels are new material that is similar to the worn replaced originals. The doors have a locking mechanism and the key is present, but the lock latch is so worn and recessed that the lock doesn’t prevent entry.
