Grace Hartigan ( 1922 - 2008 ) was an American born Abstract Expressionist painter and member of the New York School among her contemporaries Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Willem and Elaine De Kooning, and Franz Kline, forging a new form of painting based on bold gesture and experimental brushwork.
Well respected for her striking paintings her work focused on Abstraction, also incorporating recognizable motifs and characters from various sources into her art, moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction throughout her long career. For this reason, her work is often considered to be a precursor of Pop Art. Artworks by Hartigan are included in the permanent collections of many prestigious museums including The Museum of Modern Art New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian Institution, The Israel Museum Jerusalem, The Guggenheim Museum New York, among many others.
Hartigan repeatedly drew from American advertising in her work because of its common imagery, two dimensional structure, and bold stylistic simplifications. She began " Billboard " by arranging images from Life Magazine into a collage, which she then used as her model. Here we glimpse a smiling face above a tube of toothpaste, the neck of a wine bottle poised over a glass, a mold of jello surrounded by fruit, and the keys of a piano. Of this melange of commercial and mechanical imagery she remarked " I have found my subject, it concerns that which is vulgar and vital in American life, and possibilities of transcendence into the beautiful ".
The rare Abstract Expressionist framed lithograph print is period custom framed in 1970. It is framed with glass in an elegant beautiful Mid Century Modern style archival presentation in a matte black finish, gold leaf gilded detailed wood frame molding, with a natural ivory cream linen wrapped beveled cut matting. There is an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
