Mathias Barz founded, along with Otto Pankok, the Els Circle of Painting in Dusseldorf in the 1920's. An outspoken member of the resistance to the Nationalist Party he joined the German Communist Party (KPD) in 1919. He married Hilda Stein, a Jewish actress. Mathias Barz would be classified as a "degenerate" by the Nazi's in the 1930s and was banned from working. He, along with his wife, also banned from working due to her Jewish heritage, were hidden from the Gestapo by the Catholic priest, Joseph Emonds - a pacifist and outspoken member of the resistance. Mathias Barz was born into a strict Catholic home. This unique expressionist piece is rare with this clearly overt religious theme painted by Barz.
